Make sure that there's no track below your text that's "On". When everything's off, you should see the checkerboard pattern instead of the soccer ball or the brick wall. The toggle for the checkerboard On/Off is the little blue circle at the bottom of the Composite window. If you export a targa or render out an animation this way, your NLE should interpret that properly. HTH.
