Chris Baker3D objects

Does anyone know if you can import 3D objects from programs such as Maya, Softimage, etc.?? We did a 3D book on a table opening up as you zoomed in on it. While it is not yet to the polished point we want it to be, it was very difficult to animate once you started moving things around without x,y and z screens. We thought maybe it might be easier in a program where you have x, y, and z screens.
