Yes, use the wand tool to select the outline.
It's different because there is absolutley no tracing involved. If you have a logo with many very intricate curves and points, it could take a long time to trace with the pen tool. Using this method you simply select the outline with the wand tool and create a path from that selection.
Take for example even the Boris text logo. Would you really feel comfortable tracing the edges of that - would you be able to get a good representation quickly? I wouldn't...definitely not as quickly as I could by selecting the path with one click (okay, plus a shift-click for the holes in the "B" and the "o") and exporting that path to Illustrator. Make sense? Makes a whole lot of sense to me.
The pen tool is very powerful, and it wouldn't amaze me if it was easier for you to just draw the path with the pen tool. However, your original question made me think this method may be easier for you - you asked if there was another way. Maybe you should just try it with a fairly complex logo or shape to see if it's easier for you...if not, then keep using the pen tool!

I know boris can extrude eps and that's great and all...BUT, how do I produce my graphics in EPS format for Boris to use them???
I have all my graphics in photoshop and can use illustrator, but don't know it that great...
All i want is the to extrude my logo like the boris word is extruded in the video on the installer videos you watch when they are installing...and it says..."you can extrude eps files..."
I know I can do it....but how .... when i bring my photoshop graphic to illustrator and save as eps this doesn't work??
Ok, my work around was this....i took the psd file into RED and created a spline on top of it and pen tooled my own points on top...then i extruded this spline....there has to be a better way though....cuz this time i got lucky as the font in the logo i had, but what if it is artwork and the client wants it extruded...how do i do this??
