While MediaPlayer can play DVDs, it needs an installed MPEG-2 codec (this codec isn't free - it requires a license fee). Usually it gets installed alongside a software DVD player. Often at least a "lite" version of such a player (like WinDVD or PowerDVD) is bundled with a DVD-ROM drive.
