hello all...
i'm pleased to announce that i've added some new functionality to the posting mechanism that i think everybody will enjoy. it relates to urls that are added in posts, and as of now, all plain urls that are in your post will automatically be linked up to a new window when you preview or submit your post. please read on to understand how this works.
i use the term "plain" for lack of a better one. what i mean by this is that any full url (including protocol) in plain text in your post. for example, you'll notice these examples:
-
http://www.creativecow.net/index.php?forumid=1
-
https://www.amazon.com
-
ftp://ftp.netscape.com
all of these urls were plain text when i made this post, and the posting code found them and put the wrapper around them to link them to a new window (i.e. i didn't type any html). note the 3 protocols - http, https and ftp. these are the only link types that will be converted, and you will need to include the protocol in your link to have it "linked up". for example, this will not work:
http://www.creativecow.net/index.php?forumid=1
if you have a signature file that includes one of the following, they will remain untouched (this is the "plain" part i referred to earlier):
- a link you put html around manually (such as in your signature)
- a link to an image
- a
word style link
outside of these, any non-linked full urls will be linked up for you. if you don't want a link to be affected, simply leave the protocol off (that's the "http://" part) or put it in your own html (the latter being a tad redundant, however).
for our windows/ie users, i will still leave the link tool in the link tool set, however you shouldn't need to use it too often anymore...
one small note - please have some patience with this, as there is a decent probability of a few bugs with this one...there is an endless set of urls out there, and while i have done my best to write a script to catch them all, there's a chance that one could slip through here or there. if this happens, please let me know.
i hope this is functionality that everybody enjoys! if you have any questions, please contact me at
curtis@creativecow.net (you still have to add mailto links manually for now, btw) or simply respond to this message.
thanks all for your continued support!
