You can make complex transitions by creating an extra video file which flows on from your menu and actually contains the transition. When a viewer selects something from the menu it would play that transition video before going directly to the selected item. The Spy Kids DVD is a good example of this if you can get your hands on it, I don't know what program authored this menu, but I believe DVDWS can do this by using this method.
