Actually, PNG is not much like JPEG, since it really is mathematically lossless. You could convert from PNG to TGA and back a million times, and would get exactly the same image out on the other end. Also PNG supports 32-bit mode, just like TGA.

Maybe you're getting confused by GIF (which is lossless in 8-bit RGB, but doesn't support higher bit depths).

Wavelet, while great for lossy applications, really isn't that much on an efficiency boost over DCT codecs for lossless applications. JPEG2000 lossless is only maybe 10% more efficient on typical natural images than JPEG-LS, at the cost of massively more CPU horsepower. Note how Apple's much hyped Pixlet can't really play decent quality 1920x1080, even on a 2x2.0 G5. I can do better with MPEG-2, both in compression efficiency and playback performance.
