[Sean C. Cunningham] "Sure thing, the 480 lines refers to the actual color resolution, per line, of HDCAM. 3:1:1 1080 video equals 1440x1080 luminance resolution and 480x1080 for chroma resolution. "
I've worked with the engineers that developed the HDCAM format and the true colorspace of the HDCAM system 22:11:11. Since there is no subcarrier frequency issue this could also be rounded off to 2:1:1 which is the same luma to chroma ratio as 4:2:2. It truth of fact 22:11:11 is a lot closer to 4:2:2 than it is to 3:1:1.
I've been working post with HDCAM equipment for more than two years. Of course there are some problems. But the problems I've run into most are usually caused by someone who doesn't have enough experience with the camera. The factory settings on the F900 suck ! Starting from there someone can really get themselves in trouble. I've also done post for Varicam material. From what I've heard you can pretty much just pick it up and shoot. Maybe that's good, maybe not. All I can say is the HDCAM shooter I work with now always brings me fantastic images, and I can generally pull a 100% believable key right in FCP with very little effort at all. I guess I must be lucky !
