The two most common 35mm projection formats are 1.85 matted widescreen and 2.39 anamorphic widescreen. Since HD is native 16:9, i.e. 1.78 : 1, this is usually transferred to 35mm with a 1.78 hard matte and then the image is slightly further masked to 1.85 during projection.

It could also be cropped to 2.39 and stretched and output to 35mm anamorphic, if you had composed with such cropping in mind.
