WP,

You need to render the HD stream at at the proper profile and level yes, but the trick is you also have to multiplex it/them into a complex format known as a transport stream. There's a piece of software from Manzanita Systems called MP2TSMS (MPEG-2 Transport Stream Multiplexer for Single Programs) which sells for around $800 that'll do that for you. Windows XP with DirectX 9.0 does give you the raw components to then copy the transport stream via firewire to a device like the JVC DVHS deck although you'll probably have to patch together a graph using their GraphEdit utility to do so.

Anyway, please pardon my rambling, but following these steps it would be possible to do this although it'd likely be a slow and arduous process. It seems to me a good firewire hard drive is a much simpler way to go (that's how we do it.) Hope this helps.

Bart
