Sorry for the brash earlier comment (I'd just made a stupid mistake and lost several hours work). Yes I agree, if you're going to work with a 10-bit tape format (D5 for example) then by all means go with a 10-bit NLE. Kona HD is a good inexpensive choice. There are several others as you've pointed out. I dont't think I'd want to cut a feature on something like Smoke, though, but maybe that's just me.
I know HDCAM is limited to 8-bit and I'm thoroughly familier with spacial and chroma compression techniques involved. The point of my earlier posting (brashness aside) is if one selects HDCAM as their platform of choice (as we have) there's really no advantage to having a 10-bit NLE.
