Well you could say that one is playing with Fire no matter what you do...even RAID-3 or RAID-5 is not perfect be it ATA to SCSI or just SCSI or FC-AL. And neither is tape.
The way I see many working is they keep their project and EDL safely backed up each day or even multiple times each day and simply restore. Sure you loose all your render time but you have not lost everything.
There is nothing like a good stable system no matter what you are doing.
