Jeremy -

The 24p look WILL be preserved...that is basically determined by the frame rate at which you originally captured in the Varicam. After the copied frames are inserted, it will technically be 60fps material, but it will still have the 24p look. If you had recorded at 60fps in the camera, it would have a video look because the exposure time is reduced and in turn, the motion blur that we associate with a 24p look will be greatly reduced as well.

If projecting at true 24fps is not an issue, you should be able to lay your 24p FCP sequence back to the 1200a and then project the output of that tape. The signal off of that tape will be 60fps, but the material will still retain the 24p look. The most notable effect of this should be that any 24fps flicker will be reduced and "smoothed out".

Thanks for the update. The reason I brought up the 1080 upres is because most film printers, to my knowledge, are 2k scanners, so the material often has it's resolution brought up to 1080x1920 for the film out. I have been told that many film scanners do not read QT files directly, so they must be converted prior to being fed to the scanner (to .dpx files, I believe). I also know that some CC machines cannot work with QT files, so this is another area that I am trying to compile information on.

However, I'm sure there are scanners and workflows for film out that I am not aware of, so perhaps this is not always the case. If you could keep me posted on your experience with your film out I would continue to be in your debt!

Thanks again for your responses,

Robert
