I have only just seen this post as I have been away at IBC and holidays.
You can shoot Varicam at 24fps, then edit on a 24fps timeline.
If you output a 1080/24p master to HD-D5 (or HD-Cam) then that master tape can be replayed at 24 frames-per-second or at 25 frames-per-second in the HD-D5.
This speeds the master up by 4% so audio may need pitch correcting but the master output of 1080/50i will have 25-frame timcode.
This way you can bridge the 50Hz and 60Hz worlds.
