Nick, in essence, the answer to your question is... yes, there is some rendering needed before combining the two frame-rates in your timeline. The stuff you shot at 24p will not require any rendering as the appropriate flags will be recognized on the fly when you capture. Its only the "off frame rate" (undercranked/overcranked) material that will require rendering through the frame rate converter plug-in.
