Timecode dubs from a HD1700 VTR ????

I'll be shooting a project in 24 fps VariCam and the client wants to have letterboxed DVCAM dubs with corresponding timecode.
My DSR30 DVCAM deck does not have TC in. I'm thinking of going SDI out from the HD1700 VTR into my Avid and reading the TC off the 232 remote. I could then dub my tapes back from the Avid to DVCAM via firewire. Does this sound like it could work ? any other simplier solution ?
thanks
