You will never find anyone that will tell you,"Yeh, Go ahead, it's ok." Because you are into performance rights. The person performing, plus the person who wrote it want to be paid when it is performed for a group of people. Someone may say they do it all the time and never get caught, but the second someone tell's you it's ok, and you get nailed. I don't think you are going to be happy with that person. I have always used production music. Some of it is actually very good. I personally like Firstcom, but it can be expensive, unless you do a needle drop charge. Usually runs about $75 for the use in one production. Then you have the right to play that production as many times as you wish with no extra charges. There are others too that are worth the money.
