Performance rights can vary according to who is the writer, and artist. Also to consider is the venue you are playing, and will it be reproduced for distribution. Many venues such as the hotels in Las Vegas, pay blanket royalties to BMI and ASCAP for performance rights since they have shows and also music playing through the halls, etc. If you are planning distribution of any recorded material using the music the price starts going up real fast. The best thing to do is find out if the venue pays blanket coverage for performance rights, then if need be, contact BMI or ASCAP according on which the writer is registered with. As with many things there are many variables. Don't volunteer too much until you find out your rights, or they can take you for as much as they think they can get by with.
